Solensia® 7 mg/ml – Breakthrough Monthly Injection for Feline Osteoarthritis Pain
Solensia (frunevetmab) is the first and only FDA-approved monoclonal antibody therapy specifically designed for cats to control the pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA). Manufactured by Zoetis, this innovative veterinary medicinal product offers long-lasting relief with a single subcutaneous injection administered once every month by a veterinarian.
What is Solensia?
Solensia is a sterile, ready-to-use solution for injection containing 7 mg/ml of frunevetmab, a felinized monoclonal antibody (mAb). It targets and neutralizes Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), a key protein involved in the transmission of pain signals in cats suffering from osteoarthritis. By blocking NGF, Solensia significantly reduces joint pain, improves mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life.
Key Benefits
- Once-monthly treatment – Convenient long-acting pain control lasting up to 4 weeks
- Proven efficacy – Clinical studies show significant reduction in OA pain; many owners report improved activity and well-being within 2–3 weeks
- Excellent safety profile – Well tolerated even in cats with mild to moderate chronic kidney disease (IRIS stages 1–2)
- Minimal liver and kidney involvement – Eliminated via normal protein degradation pathways, similar to naturally occurring antibodies
- First-in-class therapy – The only monoclonal antibody approved for veterinary use in cats for OA pain
Indications
For the alleviation and control of pain associated with osteoarthritis in cats aged 12 months and older weighing at least 2.5 kg.
How Solensia Works
In osteoarthritis, damaged joints produce elevated levels of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). NGF amplifies pain signaling to the brain. Frunevetmab specifically binds to NGF, preventing it from activating pain receptors. The result is effective, targeted pain relief without the systemic effects commonly associated with traditional NSAIDs.
