Home Dog Grooming Tips: An Easy Guide

Grooming your pet at home might be simpler than you think. We have collected helpful tips, the general manager at Zen Dog Services in Toronto, to make the experience easier and more enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Start with the nails

Regular nail trims every few weeks are essential for your dog's grooming routine. Most pet stores offer nail clippers in various sizes to accommodate your dog's size. Trimming your dog's nails once every four to six weeks is ideal. Remember to cut the dewclaw and, if you accidentally nick the "quick," apply cornstarch or styptic powder to stop the bleeding.

Focus on key areas

dry-trimming essential areas such as the face, ears, and hygienic areas to maintain cleanliness and prevent infections. Good craft scissors can be used for this type of trim, as long as they're sharp and haven't been used for other purposes.

Invest in a grooming kit

For a full-body groom, purchase a pet clipper or a grooming kit with different blades. Take time to familiarize yourself with the equipment and read the instructions to understand the type of blade you're using and how short it will cut your dog's hair. There's no need to invest in an expensive clipper unless you plan to groom your dog regularly.

Never cut a dirty or matted coat

Always brush your dog before bathing. If the coat is not brushed out, any matting will become more difficult to manage. Use brushes or combs suitable for your dog's hair, and consider a wide-tooth comb for tangles. To avoid hurting your dog, place your finger between the mats and their skin as you brush them out. You can also use human-hair conditioner or pet conditioner to make brushing easier.

Bathe your dog

Once your dog is well brushed, give them a bath using a shampoo specifically formulated for dogs, such as an oatmeal and aloe shampoo. This type of shampoo can condition the hair and help with the dog's scalp. There are also shampoos that target specific conditions like flaky skin or hair shedding. After bathing, towel dry or blow dry your dog, and then brush them again when their coat is fully dry.

Consider your dog's temperament and condition

Make sure your dog is calm before grooming by giving them a good workout. A walk or play session can help tire them out and make them more cooperative during grooming. Be firm and talk in a calm voice, keeping treats handy to reward good behavior.
